Hexham Community Garden holds Good to Grow Day in April

Hexham Community Garden will join the national Good to Grow Week from April 22 to 29 to celebrate community food growing.

The garden will welcome volunteers on Tuesday, April 23 from 10am-12pm to join in its Good to Grow Day, which explores how to grow food and celebrate the start of spring with friends and neighbours.

Community Garden co-ordinator Amy Hemmings said: "We are inviting people to come to the community garden to help us get the garden going for spring. We will be preparing the beds for growing, planting seeds and seedlings, and giving the garden a bit of a tidy-up.

"Everybody is welcome, no gardening experience is necessary. If you've never been to the garden before, or if you've ever wondered how to get involved, this is the perfect opportunity to find out more. Come and meet our group of friendly volunteers and get stuck in."

Fiona McAllister from Capital Growth, which is running the initiative, said: "Good to Grow Day gives us a much-needed platform to shout about the gardens that need protecting and celebrating for the difference they make to people’s lives. With the cost-of-living crisis forcing more people into food poverty, there’s a real opportunity for community gardens to redefine the critical role they play.

"This year, we’re looking forward to engaging more people in the biodiversity benefits of urban food growing, and we’ll be inviting all gardens to do a bug count too. Together, let’s plant some seeds of hope and demonstrate how more than ever, we need these spaces in our communities for people and for wildlife.”
