LISTED building consent has been sought to remodel an existing extension.

A planning application has been submitted to Northumberland County Council to remodel a rear single-storey extension at The Hemmel, Broomhaugh in Riding Mill, by the agent Insight Architectural Design Ltd.

The Hemmel is a detached property and a converted agricultural barn historically forming part of the larger property of the grade II listed Broomhaugh Farm.

A heritage statement said: "The farmhouse is plainly listed for its architectural significance as including a 17/18th-century bastle, a particular type of building of which relatively few survive."

The Hemmel was not associated with the bastle, but with the later Georgian farmhouse. It has been in separate ownership to Broomhaugh Farm since 2002.

The building is constructed of random rubble sandstone, with a natural pitched slate roof.

The proposed works relate to the single-storey lean-too element on The Hemmel's south elevation.

The heritage statement said: "The proposal is to remodel this extension with fixed glazing to the roof and new openings on the east and south elevation.

"The proposed openings would be of traditional proportions (similar to stable or byre doors) and divided vertically. The total area of glazing would be less than the existing openings on this elevation. As the extension was built in 2003 the scheme would result in no loss of historic fabric."
