THE grieving parents of Holly Newton are hoping to spare other families the agony of losing a loved one by fundraising for publicly-accessible 'trauma kits', with the aim of potentially saving lives.

Micala and Lee Trussler lost their 15-year-old daughter Holly when she was fatally wounded in Hexham on January 27, 2023.

Now, the pair are hoping to raise funds to buy and install three 'bleed boxes and critical injury kits' around the north east of England, starting with Hexham, Haltwhistle and Consett.

Similar to public defibrillators, the kits contain first aid materials for use in emergency situations.

Since setting up the fundraiser this month, they have raised £265 out of their £1,500 goal.

Micala said: "We have only heard about a trauma kit recently when we saw a family down south campaigning for one and we thought towns in Tynedale should have one, just like a defibrillator.

"However, unlike a defibrillator, not many people have heard of a bleed kit, and I have received a lot of questions about it after announcing our fundraiser. That is why we think it is important to have them.

"Our fundraiser is to be able to purchase three of the kits and place them in areas that were linked to Holly - as a sort of memory to her.

"So, at the start, they will be in Hexham, Haltwhistle and Consett but we hope to build more of a campaign with them so more towns and villages can have them as well.

"We are hoping to later possibly develop an app or even create a social media awareness of where to find the kits so, in a panicked state, someone can find it as soon as possible and perhaps save someone's life.

"I'm not convinced that a bleed kit/trauma kit could have saved Holly's life, if it was available at that time, but we will never know.

"We are doing this fundraiser as at the moment - it is the only thing keeping us going and to talk about as court proceedings are taking a long time and there is nothing to do about it - but this is something we can do.

"We are very grateful for everyone's help so far and sharing the fundraiser across social media.

"We also will be doing other fundraisers to help raise money for it as well."
