ORGANISERS of a much-loved show have made big changes to be more inclusive to its attendees.

The countdown is on for the much-loved Northumberland County Show, which takes place on Saturday, May 25, at Bywell near Stocksfield.

Ahead of the event, organisers have been updating many of its facilities such as toilets.

The facilities include a height-adjustable changing table, toilet with grab rails, motorised hoist and plenty of space for carers to move around.

A dedicated attendant will be on hand to raise up the tail lift, help with the equipment and keep it clean and hygienic, although they will not help with the care of the user in the unit.

Other changes also include a larger parking area for blue badge holders as well as regular updates on ground conditions on social media before the show.

Tynedale Agricultural Society will provide a refund to a carer or companion who is supporting a disabled person to access the Show, who might otherwise not be able to attend. This is not related to weather at all, and no refunds are provided due to poor conditions. We provide information about the ground conditions throughout the week before the show so individuals can make an informed decision about whether to attend, and which mobility assistance vehicles or wheelchairs will be suitable for them in the circumstances.

Volunteers and stewards are also training with Dementia Friend to aid visitors who may have extra needs and anyone with hidden disabilities, sunflower badge or lanyard. The sunflower is a discreet sign that identifies an individual who may face hidden challenges or require more support from those around them.

There will also be a British Sign Language interpreter will be providing commentary alongside the Alpaca judging, enabling those with hearing impairments to enjoy the action. This comes after the success of the Braille signage in the Alpaca Section last year.

Kerry Robson, the Show Secretary said: “It’s our aim to create a welcoming environment for all visitors, and every year we strive to create more ways to enable those with extra needs to enjoy the Northumberland County Show.

"We hope our training and new facilities will help everyone have the best day out.”

Advance tickets are available now, with early bird discounts, on their website.

Carers refunds from the Event Office on show day. See our accessibility notes on https://northcountyshow.co.uk/visitors/
