APPROVAL has been granted for listed building consent to improve fire safety at a ruined medieval castle.

Prudhoe Castle, on Station Road, is a Grade I listed building and a planning application was submitted to Northumberland County Council by the agent Spence and Dower on behalf of the English Heritage Trust to upgrade an existing plant room to improve fire compartmentation.

A plant room is a dedicated space containing equipment required to provide or supply building services including ventilation, electrical distribution, water and more.

The application proposed to divide the plant room, located on the ground floor of the castle's Manor House, to form a new dedicated plant and storage room.

Existing walls and ceilings will also be upgraded to improve fire safety.

Approval by the county council was given on March 19.
