People in Hexham are being urged to check for signs of rot in their homes following harsh winter weather that has left wood prone to decay.
The Property Care Association (PCA) has issued the warning, stating that heavy rainfall and storms have led to high levels of water damage, potentially threatening the structural strength of properties.
James Berry, deputy CEO of the PCA, pressed upon the issue, saying that while damaged wood can be managed if caught early, further neglect could lead to structural damage.
"We’ve seen homes tackle some of the most challenging weather this winter, with wind and driving rain damaging the entire building envelope", he said.
Wet and dry rot can appear from hidden places like under floorboards.
The PCA urges homeowners to seek professional assistance if signs of wet or dry rot are suspected, and alerts vacant homeowners to check for potential damages.
