A Boots pharmacy in Prudhoe will remain open despite previous reports to the contrary, the company has confirmed.

The store on Front Street was included in a list of branches set to close this year as part of restructuring efforts by Boots that has seen it close some outlets that are close to another.

This caused concern in Prudhoe, as in late 2023 the other Boots branch – also on Front Street – had already closed down.

But the company has now confirmed that this was a mistake, with the Prudhoe store included on the list referring to the one that has already closed. It followed concern raised by Prudhoe South councillor Gordon Stewart.

Prior to the confirmation, Cllr Stewart said: “This has caused a lot of concern locally, with residents worried about the lack of such a vital service. I have been reassured by Boots that the closure notice refers to 77 Front Street, which closed in 2023, not 48 Front Street.

“I have asked Boots to clarify the position. I wish to reiterate that Prudhoe has a vibrant range of businesses and encourage people to shop locally to ensure this continues.”

And following the confirmation the store will remain open, Cllr Stewart added: “I am delighted that Boots have confirmed that the shop will remain open. It is located in an ideal location within the town centre, close to doctors’ surgeries, free car parking and it is on a bus route.

“Prudhoe is a large community and to have such vital services is a must.”

The closure in 2023 was one of 300 Boots stores to shut its doors for good as part of the nationwide restructure. It comes at a difficult time for the pharmacy sector which has also seen fellow provider Lloyds sell up all of its existing branches and leave the trade altogether.

In Northumberland, a gap in pharmacy provision has now been identified in the Newsham area of Blyth as a result of two Boots branches in the town closing down.
