TENS of trees were planted in an effort to improve roadside verges and the local environment.

Rotary Ponteland Members and Friends participated in a tree planting session on Rotary Way on Sunday, November 19 in association with Northumberland County Council.

Despite recent heavy rain, the group managed to plant 60 native British trees along the roadside at the Callerton Lane end of Rotary Way.

The tree planting was organized by Peter Tincombe, president of Rotary Ponteland and Peter Lowry, chair of the Ponteland Action Group for the Environment.

The trees were supplied by the Woodland Trust.

President Peter Tincombe said: "This was the first phase of a plan to plant 150 young trees in and around Ponteland and we hope that the young saplings will grow into mature trees that will brighten the roadside verges and help towards the improvement of the local environment.“
