CADETS sold poppies to raise money for the Poppy Appeal on Remembrance Day in Prudhoe.

More than £1,450 was raised through selling poppies by cadets at Aldi in Prudhoe at the retail park and the Prudhoe Co-Op.

The cadets, aged 12-18, sold the poppies on November 4 and November 11.

Chris Barrett, sergeant instructor of the Prudhoe Detachment of the Northumbria Army Cadet Force, said: "It was good for them because they have to do it as part of their cadet syllabus along with community engagement. We also took them on a cinema trip to see the new Michael Caine film, The Great Escaper, and they wrote an essay on the film, what it was about and what it meant to them.

"We are really pleased with the amount raised, it was all down to their efforts," he added.

The money will help the Poppy Appeal support injured service personnel.

"Anybody who's served one day in the Armed Forces can approach a Royal British Legion if they've fallen on hard times or became injured. The British Legion uses funds to help them, whether that's through rehabilitation, a wheelchair or a prosthetic.

"We're so proud of our young adults and the effort they put in, it's why we're so successful. If any young adults want to come along and join the cadets, it's a really good thing for younger people to do."
