Date set to fix lift at Windsor Court in Corbridge

For more than 10 weeks, residents in Windsor Court, Corbridge have felt 'trapped' in their flats after a lift they relied heavily on has been out of use.

Windsor Court, is a small block of 30 retirement flats which is purpose built, for independent living for people over 60 years old and residents feel that without a reliable working lift, Windsor Court is not fit for purpose.

Residents have claimed to be feel safe on the stairs and have cancelled doctor appointments and dread bringing any shopping up to their home.

After hearing the frustrations of residents and their families, Kingston Property services, who look after the flats, looked for contractors to do the job and secured one to repair it.

Several weeks later they have confirmed to residents and the Hexham Courant that work will take place later this month (September 18).

80-year-old Penny Jackson said: "I bought my flat in December 2014 and have lived here for nine years.

"I am 82 years old and l have severe breathing difficulty- hence my concern about the lift. 

"The latest information I have is that Taylor Lifts have been awarded  the contract  to repair the lift and will start the work on 18th September- or earlier if conditions allow. "I’m not holding my breath but am faintly optimistic."

A Kingston spokesman said:"Contractors attended the site in August to take measurements and the full works are scheduled to be carried out on 18 September 2023.

"All residents were updated in August with this information."

Corbridge Councillor Nick Oliver praises the quick action of the property service and that a solution has been found.

He adds: "“It’s my understanding that the lift will be replaced on September 18th and that is as fast as Kingston Property Services could find somebody to it.

"It’s great that a solution has been found, the lift will soon be working again and that residents will have easier access to and from their homes.”
