A TYNEDALE primary school governor praised for 'outstanding contribution' in her town.

Ponteland resident and school governor at Richard Coates Church of England Primary School, June Atkinson has been recognised for her efforts in her community.

As well as her role in the primary school she spends her free time in town as a local fundraiser and a volunteer for events.

In March 2022, after Russia invaded Ukraine, June organised a three day community collection at St Mary's Parish Church in Ponteland for the Ukrainian people.

Ponteland Photographic Society Publicity Officer and member, June Atkinson, kept herself busy through lockdown by completing Open University courses, one of which was 'Teaching the Holocaust'.

Speaking about it to the Courant in March she said: "This gave me a deep understanding of the present situation in Ukraine," she said. "I felt we had to act to offer support."

"A team of volunteers quickly signed up each day, and we worked non-stop receiving an overwhelming amount of the requested items: food, medical supplies, daily necessities,  new clothing as well as children's necessities and toys, which were a joy to pack. The pets were not forgotten, as dog and cat food has also been given. Someone kindly donated a cat carrier."

In recognition of her good samaritan ways and to say a thank you for her hard work, she was awarded Guy Opperman's MP Community Champion Award to which he presented to her earlier this year.

Speaking about the award June said:"In receiving this Award, I am honoured, of course, but I also accept it on behalf of those with whom I volunteer in supporting Guide Dogs Association, Eliot Smith Dance, St. Oswald's Hospice, Richard Coates C of E Primary School, Sage Gateshead and St. Mary's Parish Church."

Guy Opperman's Community Champion Award has ran for several years and allows local residents to nominate community members who have made outstanding contributions to their community.

Guy Opperman MP adds: "I was delighted to present June with a Community Champion Award.

"She is an outstanding servant to the community across Ponteland through her charity work and volunteering.

"Huge congratulations, June, and thank you for all you do for Ponteland."
