A MAN who grew his hair for nearly 10 years decided it was time for the chop and donated it to charity instead of wasting it on the hairdresser's floor.

Frank Brown, who works at Tesco's in Hexham, has donated 22 inches of his hair to the Little Princess Trust.

The Little Princess Trust provides free real hair wigs to children and young people, up to 24 years, who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other conditions.

They also fund childhood cancer research searching to find kinder and more effective treatments.

Frank chose this charity after hearing a heartbreaking story of a family friend who died of cancer.

He cut his hair on Saturday, July 29 at his sister Felicity Brown's house and also did it live on Facebook.

Hexham Courant: Frank to donate his hair to The Princess Trust

"I picked this charity as my sister runs a non-profit gymnastics club called Gymtopia and unfortunately one of her gymnasts lost her life to cancer," Frank, of Allendale explains.

"And, being a father of three myself - my eldest Shaina is also a coach at the gym - it really hit home.

"So I decided it was time I did my bit.

"I have been growing it for about 10 years, but it's not the first time I've had long hair but I'm quite glad to get it cut.

"It was getting a little bit of a nightmare to brush, especially after I had just been in the shower."

"So far I haven't got a total for how much I have raised but we are hoping to raise a little bit more at the moment online I've £261 and through the Tesco community, I've raised £370.

"So from what I've read that should be enough for three wigs altogether not including my hair.

Hexham Courant:

"I'd like to thank my sister Felicity Brown for getting the whole ball rolling on the internet and I'd like to thank Amanda Grey for picking up the ball and running with it, without her help selling sweets in TT Tesco's for me I'd never have got past my goal of £200."
