A MYSTERIOUS artwork appeared through the night on a wall at a tennis club.

Following Stocksfield and District's Tennis Club’s recent spring clean, a mysterious bit of artwork popped up overnight on the hitting practice wall.

Club chairman Mark Johnson said: “The wall was freshly painted and was looking great and really professional. We left the paint to dry and when we came back the next morning this little face had appeared.

“We’re a really friendly bunch and this artwork is in keeping with our cheerful club so I think he’s here to stay."

Members of Stocksfield Tennis Club, located in Guessburn, freshened up the club ahead of the new season ready to welcome new members and other local clubs for matches.

Mark said: “Stocksfield Tennis Club has been providing a service to the local community for over 65 years and we’d love to continue to do that.

“We are currently fundraising to make improvements to our courts and facilities so people can keep playing here for years to come.

“And if anyone knows who might be responsible for our new artwork please let me know,” Mark joked.

He said the club had a great turnout of members who cleaned gutters, washed windows and painted to help get the facilities ready for the season ahead.

"Even though we’d all much rather have been playing tennis, we had a great time coming together to fix the place up a bit. It was a real reflection of what a supportive friendly club we are that so many people came down to help out.”

Whilst club members gave the courts and clubhouse some much-needed TLC, it is the courts and fencing that are in need of attention.

Mark said: “Our facilities are over 65 years old and were damaged in the storms over recent years and now aren’t in the best condition.

“Age and weather damage has left the courts slippy and uneven so we are fundraising to replace them and bring some improvements to the club."

Storm Arwen damage and a financial hit due to Covid-19 meant club funds have depleted. Fundraising is underway and anyone can donate on the Crowdfunding page.
