A businessman is seeing the continuing success of revamping classic Mazda Bongo campervans as staycations become more popular since COVID-19.

Knowing his field in great detail, owner Tim Wing has been importing Bongo campervans from Japan, then stripping them to their basic structure and building backup to a modern reliable example since 2015.

What started as a hobby for Tim has now become a successful business as the Stocksfield business continues to go, supplying these clever car sized campers nationally and going from strength to strength.

With ever increasing customers and recognised and followed for their great efforts, the business has also recently been awarded Hexham MP Guy Opperman’s Business of the Year award.

“I have always been around local garage dealerships since being a child, my father who managed Hexham dealerships for his working career taught me the old fashioned ways from a young age,” Tim said.
“Continuing with this reliable, trustworthy and customer satisfying ethics in our business and workmanship brings the good old fashioned attitude exceeds our customer’s expectations every time, and with word of mouth we have found customers to travel the length of the country to get one of our campers.”
“We restore the vehicle to as close to new as we can, preparing them for uk roads , and Building our very special campers to cater for our customers needs”
“Wherever possible - we use local companies for specific items despite knowing that I could go online. I’d rather the money goes towards local businesses, rather than save a few quid to a faceless global conglomerate.
“We offer customers our time to come to see us to see what these campers are all about they are a car for everyday use then that becomes a weekend dayvan and camper all in one.

Hexham Courant:

“You really get a multi purpose vehicle,  we build them up to be reliable and last for years so customers have the confidence to use them as their daily to work, then drive to the highlands / lakes / coast / Europe for holidays or even just the weekend night away, all in one handy vehicle. We get some lovely holiday photos of our campers all over Europe!”
“Seeing it online in a photo and seeing it in person can make a real difference. I love showing customers features or layout possibilities to suit them - that they may have never even considered. This is one thing online dealers don’t do.”
The company was also able to change gear and push on after lockdown.
Tim adds: “For us, it was a chance to reflect on the business, to see what people want and what would improve this scene, and come up with business plans that we knew needed to happen and aim to continue to see through in the years ahead.”
“In the near future, we have some further great ideas and news to come relating to these clever little campers which we intend to launch later in the year.
“Watch this space.”
