A GROUP is gearing up to take on this year's Allendale Challenge to raise funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA).

Calum Pringle, 29, is set to complete the challenge next month along with his cousins and friends in memory of his dad Cecil.

Cecil was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in December 2021 and sadly passed away aged 68 on New Year's Eve last year.

MND is a degenerative condition which affects the brain and nervous system.

It affects up to 5,000 adults in the UK at any one time and there is no cure.

Last year, members of the Pringle family completed the Allendale Challenge, considered to be one of the toughest challenge walks around, to raise funds for the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS).

They are now determined to complete it once again, this time to raise vital funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA).

"They helped us a lot with dad," said Calum, adding he wants other families to receive the same support.

Cecil, who was born in Allendale, played the guitar and was also a keen cricketer.

"He was very well-liked in the community," said Calum. "He fought bravely against the disease and he never lost his sense of humour during it as well."

The 32nd Allendale Challenge is set to take place on April 1.

Taking an anti-clockwise loop from Allendale town, the route covers 26 miles (42 km) taking in Hard Rigg, Black Hill, and Kilhope Law before returning to the town via Spartylea, The Drag, and Ladelwell.
