A COMMEMORATIVE plaque has been installed at Bellingham Community Orchard.
Anne Blackburn, the Secretary of the Community Orchard, said: "Bellingham Community Orchard was the brainchild of Rev. Canon Michael Cooper, as a tribute to the Queen for her Diamond Jubilee."
In 2012, Michael suggested an apple orchard be planted for the Jubilee.
"Michael was the husband of our then vicar Rev. Susan Ramsaran. The Duke of Northumberland gave us permission to use part of the Fairstead and various people paid £25 to buy a tree.
"The idea was that all the apples were free to anyone who could use them, as well as creating a peaceful area to relax."
"A committee was formed in 2012 to clear the ground and plant the trees," she said.
Rev. Michael Cooper sadly died aged 90 on August 25 2021, and a plaque was installed at the Orchard this year on August 25.
The plaque reads: "In memory of Rev Canon Michael Cooper Orchard Founder 2012."
"The plaque has been mounted on a wooden seat with a diamond pattern on the back. This is in the grass circle between the eating apple trees and the cooking apple trees," Anne said.
The unveiling ceremony saw Susan attend, with Orchard Chairman Edwin Wilkinson, and founder members of the Orchard Committee and supporters.
