Whittonstall: United against plan

PARENTS of Whittonstall pupils are united in their opposition to plans for an opencast coal mine on the doorstep of the village’s first school.
In a survey organised by parents, eighty five per cent objected to the development which could be sited 165 metres away from the building.
A further 89 per cent expected the school to object to the application.
Concerns were also raised about the mine’s impact on the children’s health, their learning environment and the viability of the school.
All parents of the 74 children on the school roll completed the survey.
Despite UK Coal offering an £850,000 sweetener to the first school, governors have officially objected to the plans.
