IT WAS A fitting tribute to one of Southampton's much-loved community figures.

Hundreds of people followed the funeral cortege of Gushalia Kaur Roath who passed away after a long illness.

The grandmother of 102 was the matriarchal head of one of the city's oldest Asian families.

The Roaths moved to the Derby Road area of the city in the late 1950s.

A horse-drawn carriage yesterday carried the coffin along Derby Road to the Gurdwara Teg Sahib where a short service was conducted before friends and relatives moved to Southampton crematorium.

Mourners came from all over the UK and India to pay their respects to Mrs Roath, who died at the age of 87.
