NEW-SIGNING Charlie Griffin will miss the first four to six weeks of the season after being KO'd in Tuesday's final pre-season friendly at Oxford City.

The striker, who signed from Forest Green Rovers in the summer suffered a serious head injury and was out cold during Blues' 2-1 win.

He spent the night in an Oxford hospital and was due to have an operation on Thursday on a broken bone in his forehead.

Blues boss John Gorman said: "It was very worrying. He was out for a long time. He kept drifting in and out of consciousness."

He was crocked in a seemingly innocuous challenge with Nigel Emsden but the seriousness was soon apparent as he was stretchered off and taken straight to hospital.

The injury is a major blow to Wycombe's plans ahead of Saturday's big kick off.

Griffin, who scored 17 goals in the Conference for Forest Green last summer, would have been one of the substitutes as Wycombe look to get off to a winning start against Carlisle United.

Gorman said: "It's a real shame for the lad. He was just making a name for himself and would have been on the bench on Saturday. But he will be out for a while four to six weeks I should think."

Griffin took just two minutes to do what it took Premiership footballers 1,024 minutes to do at one stage last season when he scored past Chelsea keeper Petr Cech in a pre-season friendly and looked set for big things.

Griffin's injury completely overshadowed Tuesday's match at Court Place Farm Blues took the lead just after the half hour mark with a deflected goal from skipper-for-the-night Ikechi Anya.

He lashed home from distance, after a superb ball from Shahed Ahmed back in Wycombe colours again following his release last year released him down the right.

John Salako, playing at left back, also thumped a shot into the keeper's midriff while Jonny Dixon was also foiled by the keeper following another superb Ahmed assist.

At the other end, Blues were given some uncomfortable moments by the pacy and skilful Ray Spence.

But the whole mood of the game changed when Griffin went down just inside his own half.

He was still being treated off the pitch when his replacement , youth teamer James Faulkner, doubled Blues lead.

Again the impressive Ahmed, who is being allowed to carry on training with Blues while he seeks another club, was involved driving in a fierce low shot which the keeper did tremendously to get a hand to but Faulkner was on hand to bury the rebound.

The second half was something of a non-event with Blues still looking shaken by the injury to Griffin but Oxford did pull a goal back with a fantastic drive from the edge of the box which gave keeper Steve Williams little chance.

Blues youngsters Tom Cadmore and Steven Gregory could have been proud of their performances but it was a disappointing night for triallist Nick Bagley, who came in from Fulham for the second half Wycombe Wanderers: Williams, Martin, Salako (Ngongo 70), Nethercott (Douglas 60), Cadmore, Anya (Kamara 70), Grier (Bagley 46), Ahmed, Gregory, Griffin (Faulkner 43), Dixon (Savage 60).
