Matfen village notes

THE dramatic weather last week caused the postponement of various events in the area.
The Upper Pont Dining Club dinner has been re-scheduled to Wednesday, February 27, at 6.45pm at The Keeper’s Lodge at Matfen Hall.
This is a Northumbrian evening with Frances Dower and her Northumbrian pipes and the entertainer Alex Swailes of Rothbury.
People who have already booked will have been contacted, but if the new date is more convenient, and you would now like to book, please contact Peter Lombard on (01661) 886331 or Struan Wilson on (01661) 886592.
This is always a very convivial evening and with an excellent price for a two-course dinner, it is certainly very good value.
THE Great Whittington and Matfen Women’s Institute is a lively and enthusiastic group.
The group meets on the first Tuesday of the month in Matfen Village Hall and visitors and new members are always welcome.
The first meeting of the year takes place on Tuesday, February 5. It is a talk by Alison Arrowsmith entitled Getting the Most out of Life, advice from which we could all probably benefit!
IT was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Bill Teasdale.
Bill, and his wife Jean, were much-loved members of the community, as was evident from the number of people who attended his funeral at Holy Trinity Church, Matfen, last Tuesday. Our sincere condolences go to Bill’s family.
ON Saturday, February 16, (please note altered date) we have our fun race night.
As last year, this is a lively event for all the family, so it starts at 7pm and is free for children aged 15 and under when accompanied by an adult.
The cost to adults will include homemade soup and a stottie.
This is a mechanical race course, so it is low technology with lots of energy needed, and is great fun!
Horses are currently being sold for five races (six horses in a race), followed by a race for runners-up and then a grand final.
There is a financial prize for the winner of each race. Tickets for this event are for sale in the Village Store and horses are for sale from Derek Padgett on (01661) 886785.
Do come and enjoy a great night out to brighten up what is often a dismal time of year.
A NEW innovation in Matfen Village Hall is the service of a gents’ hairdresser.
The first date for this is the morning of Monday, February 18, with the exact time to be confirmed. Further details will be advertised shortly.
