Drama at YFC contest

YOUNG farmers from across Tynedale will take to the stage for the final of their annual drama competition on Sunday.

Members of young farmers’ clubs at Whitley Chapel, Haltwhistle, and Ponteland and Stamfordham, will contest the event in front of a full house at the Queen’s Hall, Hexham.

Each of the clubs will give a performance based on a subject or theme, and will be judged on their acting skills, improvisation, costumes and stage props.

A Queen’s Hall spokesman said a limited number of tickets may still be available. For more information call (01434) 652477.

Saturday, June 20th, 1885

Over 2,000 people attended the Temperance Gala held at Greencroft Park, Haltwhistle.

Led by the Bardon Mill Brass Band, 12 temperance societies paraded through the town, prior to an open air meeting in the park.

During the event the Rev. J.M. Russel condemned the House of Commons for rejecting a proposal to increase taxes on spirits and beer.
