BLOOMING ideas from children at a Furness school have come to life, thanks to a new school garden.

Green fingered pupils at Roose School were keen to learn gardening skills and asked for a school garden in the playground.

Now, thanks to help from Hill Foot Garden Centre, the children are delighted with the new attraction.

Jenny Redhead, a teacher at the North Row school in Barrow, said: “We wanted to improve the playground and the children wanted a garden.

“It is the first phase of the development of the playground and it does look really nice.

“They really like it and think it’s amazing.

“There is now a gardening club for children so they can help maintain and look after it.

“All the local residents also like it and are keeping an eye on the garden for us.”

The garden was officially opened by Barrow’s mayor Ken Williams and mayoress Pat Williams last Wednesday.

Local residents, parents and Hill Foot Garden Centre’s landscaping manager, Russell Dodd, also attended the event.

Mrs Redhead said: “We want to say thanks to local business for donations, to Derin engineers who gave us a generous grant, and to the Parent Teacher Association for raising money. The children can now go and sit in the garden and use it as a quiet area.”
