Council’s inertia

HEXHAM councillors’ proud tradition of inaction, and opposition to changes that might benefit the public as a whole, goes back a long way.

Will the Duke ride roughshod over the housing protesters?

hxOvinghamProtest08ct I WONDERED how long it would be before another application to build houses would be submitted by the Duke of Northumberland.

Marriage vote

I WOULD like to take the unusual step, for me, of applauding the actions of our Tory MP Guy Opperman in voting for same sex marriages in the House of Commons last week.

Scoring points

WHO would have believed that in my 65 years I would agree with a Tory MP. But I support Guy Opperman’s call for a return to local councils (Courant, February 8).

Deterioration

ROSALIND Saul’s article on the state of Hexham town centre has prompted me to write to you (Courant, February 8).

CAN I make four points in response to your report on retail decline (Courant, February 8)?

Privileged landlords

YOUR article about the number of empty shops and hotels in Hexham makes depressing reading. So is the predictable response of those who can do something about it (Courant, February 8).

Health monitor

SELF-regulation hasn’t worked for the banks, the police, the press or the drinks industry. Why would the NHS be any different?

Road repairs

I WENT to see the landslip at Stocksfield. With the right brains, and men on machines, this is an elementary common sense job.

We’re left without a seat following a very strenuous shift

MY eldest son and I were carrying a settee weighing more than the England rugby team the other day when he suddenly put down his end.

Heartfelt thanks

WE are very quick to criticise the NHS but I would like to thank the system and all the paramedics and staff who came to look after me last Tuesday, after I parted company with a horse.

Open air mining

AS an ex-mines mechanic, who has worked at Stagshaw, Wylam and Hedley drift mines, North Wallbottle, Weetslade, and Montague collieries, I have worked, underground bent almost double carrying a tool bag 20 to 28lbs in wet and dirty conditions and seen miners lying on their sides in water shovelling coal onto a conveyor.

Icy conditions

KNOWN as a serial complainer, I must now praise Northumberland County Council staff for their efforts on Monday, January 21, when the weather and in particular its effects on icy Hallstile Bank, deteriorated quickly as the day progressed.

I WAS puzzled to read that Guy Opperman is attacking the County Council for its ‘dirty little secret’ about building in the green belt (Courant, January 18).
